He was educated in computer science and visual art, and practiced both disciplines in New York City before turning to writing. Other work of his has been published in philosophical journals. He is Chair of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside, and a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction. Married to author Charmaine Craig, he is completing a new novel about American religion and politics.
