Lectures, Workshops, and Office Hours

The Publishing Workshop offers lectures and discussions with publishing professionals from presses, magazines, and literary organizations across the United States and specialized workshop-based tracks for hands-on experience with book and magazine production.

  • Talks and Discussion

Over 50 guest speakers at the top of their fields from presses, magazines, and literary organizations will discuss the most important trends in the industry as well as the day-to-day work in professions from editorial to marketing and publicity to art design to sales and distribution to literary advocacy. Fellows have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion.

  • Practical Workshops

Fellows learn skills in either magazine or book publishing in hands-on workshops. In close consultation with either the staff of the Los Angeles Review of Books or of a small independent press, Fellows practice key steps and skills leading to the publication of magazines and books.

  • Professional Development Workshops

In workshops with LA Review of Books staff and HR professionals, fellows will work on resumes, cover letters, and interview skills in preparation to enter the job market.

  • One-on-one Office Hours with Speakers

All fellows will have the opportunity to sign up in advance for an individual appointment with our distinguished speakers.  These office hours are an opportunity to form connections or ask for career advice.
