Jeanette Samyn is an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Weslyan University. Her teaching and research interests concern the environmental humanities and British literature; she studies environmental theory and 19th-century (especially Victorian) literature and science. Her book project, In Praise of the Parasite: Asymmetrical Relations in the British Empire, explains how complex asymmetrical relations were embedded into 19th-century notions of "community" and “environment” through the figure of the parasite.
