Gregory P. Downs is the author of three books of history, a prizewinning short story collection, co-author of The Era of Reconstruction, 1861–1900: A National Historic Landmarks Theme Study (2017), and a leader of the historians’ efforts to create the first-ever National Park Service site devoted to emancipation at Reconstruction, proclaimed in January 2017 by President Barack Obama. He is co-editor of the Journal of the Civil War Era.
