Billy Mernit

Billy Mernit began his career as a composer-lyricist, with songs of his recorded by Carly Simon and Judy Collins. Known as “the guru of rom-com” for his bestselling screenwriting textbook, Writing the Romantic Comedy, Billy had his first novel Imagine Me and You published by Random House in 2008. He currently works as both a private script consultant and a story analyst at Universal Pictures, while teaching at the UCLA Extension Writers Program.

The Rivera Book Prize aims to provide a platform that showcases the emerging literary talent of the Chicanx/Latinx community, to cultivate the next generation of Chicanx/Latinx writers, and to continue the rich literary memory of Tomás Rivera, Chicano author, poet, activist, and educator.
