Abram Van Engen is Associate Professor of English and Faculty Affiliate in the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis. He writes and teaches primarily on early American literature, history, and religion. His most recent book is City on a Hill: A History of American Exceptionalism.
