LARB’s Best: Philosophy and Comparative Studies
It’s been one of my privileges over the last decade to be part of the LARB editorial team, which put me in a position to collaborate with some of the finest authors giving serious thought to the central questions of philosophy, faith, and culture today: not only learned and insightful people, but also imaginative and original and personable — a great joy to work with. And that’s precisely what makes it so difficult and agonizing to come with a “best of” list. Ranking these people’s work would be a fool’s errand. What I have ended up compiling, then, is a handful of examples — out of many possible — of the stylistic sophistication, wide thematic range, and distinctive literary quality of the materials I’ve had the good fortune to work on over the last decade. If this selection has any merit, it must be that of a good sampler: to make you ask for more.
