Gary Phillips has published various novels, comics, and short stories, in addition to editing several anthologies including the award-winning The Obama Inheritance: Fifteen Stories of Conspiracy Noir and the recently released South Central Noir. Violent Spring, first published in 1994, was named by CrimeReads in 2020 one of the essential crime novels of Los Angeles.

Washington Post book critic Maureen Corrigan noted that “his latest crime novel, One-Shot Harry, is his 22nd book, and it returns Phillips to his personal and literary origins. ‘Harry’ is an edgy time-travel ride back to L.A. in spring 1963, in the waning days of Golden Age L.A., when the Hollywood sign is splintering in the sun and racial tensions are escalating in advance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s upcoming Freedom Rally at the old Wrigley Field.”

Phillips is also a staff writer on FX’s Snowfall (which streams on Hulu), about crack and the CIA in 1980s South Central where he grew up.

Nathan Jefferson is the Noir editor of Los Angeles Review of Books. His short fiction has appeared in the Chicago Review.
