Sanford Biggers: Codeswitch is the first survey of the artist’s quilt-based works. The exhibition is on view at the California African American Museum (CAAM) in Los Angeles until January 23, 2022. Biggers’s interest in quilts began with his research on the narrative of quilts functioning as signposts in the Underground Railroad. The nearly fifty works include mixed-media paintings and sculptures either made from or created on pre-1900 antique quilts. The exhibition title (and material of the works) references the historically and socially-determined and constructed aspect of language and meaning-making.
