Sayre Gomez

X-Scapes is Sayre Gomez’s third solo exhibition with François Ghebaly in Los Angeles. X-Scapes finds Sayre Gomez at the crossroads of image culture and urban reality in Los Angeles. Employing a multitude of trompe l’oeil painting techniques drawn from Hollywood set painting, commercial sign painting, automotive airbrushing, and other traditions, Gomez composes pastiched visions of Los Angeles. Despite their immediate familiarity, these cityscapes are often invented, fragmented or collaged together from stock photography, cell phone photos, and found imagery. Sayre Gomez (b. 1982, Chicago, USA) holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the fall of 2019, his work will be exhibited at the Yuz Museum, Shanghai in an exhibition about the relationship between Hollywood and Los Angeles artists. Gomez’s works are held in the permanent collections of LACMA, Los Angeles; the Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles; Arsenal Contemporary, Montreal; and the Rubell Family Collection, Miami. The show runs until November 3, 2019.
