The LARB Quarterly, no. 35: Isn’t it uncanny? Launch Party

The blocks around the LARB offices have been on intermittent fire, our phones and refrigerators are sentient — time seems to have collapsed into nothing at all.

Isn’t it uncanny?

Our Fall issue is filled with prose, verse, and visual art that sits with the unease in that question. Now, in person, with music, performance, readings, and poetry, we will grapple with it again.

Come celebrate this issue launch with several of the issue contributors. Post-punk legend Kid Congo Powers will read from his story of coming into his own as a queer kid in 1970s L.A. and will play a solo set. Poet Ronaldo V. Wilson will wonder how to properly render the dead in art through performance. Two-time novelist Anna Dorn will read some uncanny (and unpublished) poetry. Poet and scholar Amanda Gunn will read from her forthcoming collection, Things I Didn’t Do with This Body. And Kate Durbin will read flash fiction on American Cheeses.

There will be cocktails provided by Greenbar Distillery, snacks by Cash Only Collective, flash tattoos by Salvador de la Torre, and vinyl music DJ’d throughout the night. Many thanks to The River LA, an open-air venue on the LA River in Frogtown, for donating their beautiful space to host us for the evening.

Tickets are $25, with proceeds supporting our nonprofit publication, or free (with code) for all LARB members and LARB Quarterly subscribers. Not a member or subscriber? Buy your ticket today, or buy a print subscription for 10% off and get into the launch, and future launches, for free!

This event will take place in an outdoor, ADA-compliant venue. For the health and safety of all in attendance, COVID-19 vaccinations are required and masks are encouraged.
