Tony Barnstone

Tony Barnstone is a professor of English at Whittier College and the author of 21 books and a music CD. His first book of poetry, Impure (1999), was a finalist for the Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets, the National Poetry Series, and other national literary competitions. The Golem of Los Angeles (2007) won the Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award. Tongue of War: From Pearl Harbor to Nagasaki (2009), a book of dramatic monologues set in the Pacific during World War II, won a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the John Ciardi Prize for Poetry, the Poets’ Prize, and a silver medal at the Independent Publishers Book Awards. His selected poetry, Buda en Llamas/Buddha in Flames (2014) appeared in a bilingual Spanish/English edition, with translations by Mariano Zaro. Barnstone’s books of translation include Chinese Erotic Poems (2007), The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry (2005), The Art of Writing: Teachings of the Chinese Masters (1996), Out of the Howling Storm: The New Chinese Poetry (1993), Laughing Lost in the Mountains: Selected Poems of Wang Wei (1991), and Ming Di’s River Merchant’s Wife (2012; co-translated from the Chinese with Neil Aitken, Afaa Weaver, Katie Farris, Sylvia Burn, and the author).
