Monique N. Matthews

Monique N. Matthews is a Los Angeles–based writer and director. The Harlem native began her career as an entertainment journalist and managing editor of a national hip-hop magazine. Monique’s work has appeared in Ebony.com, Vibe, The Source, Slam, and TV Guide. She has also been a guest panelist on NPR’s Tell Me More, KKLA’s The Dialogue, and other broadcasts.  She is a graduate of the UCLA School of Film and Television and has written for several studios, including MGM, Walt Disney Pictures, and Paramount Pictures. Monique is a former recipient of Variety’s “10 Screenwriters to Watch” and was selected to participate in Film Independent’s prestigious Directors and Writers Labs. Monique's most recent project is extraORDINARY, a 60-second digital docu-series exploring everyday people excelling in their daily loves. She is the co-wrote the self-help book Black Rose with Tyrese Gibson (The Fast & Furious, Transformers, Baby Boy), and wrote Sex Free: A (not so) Modern Approach to Dating and Relationships. In addition to writing, Monique serves as a professor at Santa Monica College in Film and Media Studies. She has also taught at Los Angeles City College and California State University, Los Angeles.
