Kemp Powers

Kemp Powers is a playwright, screenwriter, and author. An award-winning journalist for 20 years, he has written for magazines and news organizations ranging from Esquire and GQ to Forbes and Reuters. His memoir, The Shooting, was published in 2004. Kemp is a resident playwright at Los Angeles’s multi award-winning Rogue Machine Theatre company, where his world premier play, One Night in Miami … enjoyed a sold-out four-month Los Angeles run in 2013 and received four Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle as well as four NAACP Theatre awards. It has since enjoyed a record-breaking run at Baltimore Center Stage and a successful run at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and is currently in development for its first commercial run in London. He is currently developing two new plays, The Two Reds and Little Black Shadows, and has been commissioned to write a world premiere play for the DCPA. Kemp has been a storyteller at the Peabody Award–winning series The Moth, and was among the 50 storytellers selected for publication in their first-ever book, The Moth: 50 True Stories, published in 2013 by Hyperion Press. He is currently developing a dark comedy pilot for FX with fellow playwright John Pollono.
