Christopher Gaffney

Christopher Gaffney is an academic geographer who has studied the impacts of the World Cup and Olympics for more than a decade. He has lived in Rio de Janeiro since 2009 while teaching in the Graduate School of Architecture and Urbanism at the Universidade Federal Fluminense. His blog, Hunting White Elephants (geostadia.com), chronicles the urban, social, and political dynamics of Rio de Janeiro. Gaffney's first book, Temples of the Earthbound Gods (University of Texas Press), explored the history and culture of soccer stadiums in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Beginning in 2015, Gaffney will be a Senior Researcher affiliated with the Department of Geography at the University of Zürich.
