Mahmoud Abou Zeid

Mahmoud Abou Zeid, also known as “Shawkan,” is an Egyptian photojournalist, who has contributed to the U.K.-based citizen journalism site and photo agency Demotix, and the digital media company Corbis. Shawkan was arrested while he was covering the violent clashes between supporters of ousted President Morsi and the Egyptian Security Forces at Cairo’s Rabaa Square on August 14, 2013. For over three years now, he has not been formally charged, his pretrial detention has been continually extended, and his appeal for release has been denied.
