Juan Aguilera

Juan Aguilera (b.1966, Mexico) is an artist who has practiced with Creative Growth Studio in Oakland  since 1988. Aguilera’s work often draws from retablos, devotional paintings in Mexican folk art, and the “divine feminine”. Colorful underwear and nude female bodies are often accompanied by flowers, birds, and butterflies—along with associations of their sacred pollinating networks. His assemblage practice follows the divine and ornamental nature of his works on paper. The lace, beads, sequins, and glitter that embellish the panties glimmer and glitz while emitting rays of the so-called divine.

Aguilera’s virtual exhibition viewing room is online at Creative Growth.
