Ava Woo Kaufman

SELVAGE is Ava Woo Kaufman’s solo exhibition, SELVAGE, is on view at South Willard in Los Angeles. The work on view stems from a decade-long practice of engaging with found textiles and materials.

The exhibition is largely a meditation on the ways in which vestigial materials, objects, and histories of the past, present, and future shape our relationship to a changing landscape of consumption and production. Kaufman’s woven tapestries are constructed on Walco Indian Bead Looms salvaged from Los Angeles thrift stores by her grandmother. These are then mounted on palm-sized armatures made of materials ranging from book-making board to bamboo from her mother’s garden. Works references vary: from a shipping company that monopolizes most products sold on the Hawaiian islands to dragonflies.

The show runs until July 31, 2022.
