Jim Downs

Jim Downs is the author of Stand By Me: The Forgotten History of Gay Liberation (Basic Books, 2016) and Sick from Freedom: African American Illness and Suffering during the Civil War and Reconstruction (Oxford UP, 2012). He has edited four volumes on race, gender, and activism. His essays have appeared in the New York Times, New Republic, Washington Post, Vice, Slate, Time, among others.  He is Professor of History and Director of American Studies at Connecticut College.
