Edgar Allan Poe was an American author sometimes credited with originating the genres of science fiction and detective fiction. His best known works include the poems "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee" and the stories "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Purloined Letter," and "The Tell-Tale Heart."
