J.G. Ballard was an English author born and raised in the Shanghai International Settlement, an area in Shanghai controlled by foreign powers. His childhood experiences during World War II heavily influenced his apocalyptic fiction. Ballard's most famous works include The Atrocity Exhibition, Crash, and Empire of the Sun.
